The monument over the grave commemorates Australia Kate Dawson was erected by the captains of the firm of W. Howard Smith & Sons Ltd., as a mark of respect to their manager, Matthew Dawson. 

Australia Kate was the wife of Matthew Dawson and died in 1888. Mr Dawson was manager of W.Howard Smith & Sons, Newcastle Branch, for over 20 years. Mr Dawson was transferred to Maryborough, Queensland in 1894. In 1895, he was charged with defrauding the firm.
