Labour of Love

The local community was responsible for the development of the central garden and for its maintenance.  In the 1950s Robert (Bob) Quick, President of the Sawtell Progress Association, worked tirelessly to establish the central garden and also the Lyle Rose Memorial Park.

Nora Anderson and Dora Climpson also made a significant contribution to the creation of the gardens.  They planted grass `runners` and funded plant purchases themselves.  They also grew cuttings from their own gardens and, before water was connected, watered the plants by hand with buckets.

The gardens were an example of the strong community spirit in Sawtell, whose residents raised thousands of dollars to provide community facilities - a spirit that is alive in the village today.

The `plot` is a memorial garden to celebrate their labour of love.  Plantings in these beds are typical of the 1950`s era.
