Richard BoydellPrint Page
The gate commemorates Richard Barker Boydell who died in 1926. Mr Boydell was a former Shire Councillor and prominent churchman and lay preacher.
Death occurred at his residence, Caergwrle, Allynbrook, on Sunday of Richard Barker Boydell, aged 68. Deceased had only been ailing for a short time, and the news of his demise came as a great shock to his many friends. He was born at his late home and was a son of the late William Barker Boydell who arrived in Australia from England in 1836, and who died in 1878. The passing of Mr. Boydell will be a distinct loss to the district. He was an even minded public man who sacrificed much time in working for the advancement of his district. For many years he was a shire councillor of Wallarobba Shire Council, and filled the presidential chair for several terms. He was also a prominent churchman and presided as lay preacher for some considerable time. During the war his activities in patriotic spheres were unending. The funeral on Monday morning was largely attended. Service was held all the Allynbrook Church which was crowded, the choir singing appropriate hymns. The last prayers were given by Rev. Davidson, of Mayfield, assisted by Rev. Brown and Rev. Holmes. At the graveside, the chief mourners were Mr. W. J. Boydell (son), Mr. Max Boydell (nephew), Mr. Les Cooper (nephew), Messrs. A. P. and H. J. Cooper (brothers-in-law). We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved in their sad loss.
Dungog Chronicle : Durham and Gloucester Advertiser (NSW), 9 March 1926.
