Memorial tablet erected at the grave, commemorates Sarah Beckett, President of the local branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union who died in 1917.
Honor was paid this afternoon to the life-work of the late Mrs Sarah Beckett, of Williamstown, by the Women's Christian Temperance Union. A marble memorial was unveiled. Mrs Beckett, at the time of death, was president of the Williamstown branch of the W.C.T.U. More than 100 W.C.T.U. members and friends of the late president gathered at the North Williamstown railway station, and, having been joined by members from suburban organisations, proceeded along Cemetery road to the necropolis. The unveiling took place in the Wesleyan portion of the cemetery. The memorial, a white marble bow, set on a black slate ground, contained a tablet with the following lettering: - — "Erected by the members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in loving memory of their president, Mrs Sarah Beckett." At the graveside, devotional exercises were engaged in and Mrs J. Macleod, the State president, gave an address. The arrangements were in the hands of Mrs W. M. Rogers, the new president of the branch.
