The headstone over the grave was erected in memory of William C. Peaty, a member of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows who died in 1911.
On Sunday afternoon, at Rookwood cemetery, a large and representative gathering of members of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows assembled at the tomb of the late Bro. William C. Peaty, who died July 14, 1911, under particularly sudden circumstances, at his late residence, East-street, Granville, a few hours after attending a meeting of the Loyal Happy Moments Lodge, Granville, where he was a regular visitor, although a member and past officer of the Loyal Fountain of Friendship Lodge Parramatta. The departed brother had won the esteem of his fellows, and in order to perpetuate his memory it was later decided by the brethren to erect a memorial stone over the grave. This was entrusted to Mr. E. Andrews. The widow and family were present to witness the imposing ceremony.
