Burns Street commemorates Jean Burns who was the first woman to jump from an aeroplane in Australia. She jumped from the aeroplane the ‘Spirit of Mel­bourne”, and she was also the youngest female pilot in Australia.

The first Australian woman to jump from an aero­plane on Australian soil.

Descending at Essendon Airport on the 21st November 1937 from the ‘Spirit of Melbourne’ at a height of 3,200 feet.

Jean was also Australia’s young­est female pilot in 1937
