Nicholas McLeish Shand Print Page
The seat commemorates Nicholas Shand, the founder of the Byron Shire Echo. Originally the bench contained a life-size representation of Shand holding a copy of the Byron Shire Echo in his lap. The Echo is a free community paper founded in 1986 by local residents and remains independent.
Note : The sculpture has been vandalised many times and suffered extensive damage in 2008 and was considered to be beyond repair. The bench was offered as a donation to the community by the Echo.
