The monument commemorates Bourke`s riverboat poet, Francis H. Brown (1884-1933).

Francis Brown worked in Bourke for his two brothers, Walter and Herbert, who ran a paddle steamer business which included the paddle steamer, P.S. Nile, almost the last steamer to work that part of the Darling River. Brown`s poetry often featured the paddle steamers. Francis (Frank) Brown passed away at Gundabooka in 1933, at 49 years of age.
