The seat commemorates historian, poet, musician and broadcaster, Merval Hannah Hoare (1914 -2001), who was a founding member of the Norfolk Island Historical Society.
Born Wellington 17 June 1914, her schooling developed early interests in music, prose and poetry. She married in 1949 and lived with her husband, who worked for Civil Aviation, on Norfolk Island for much of her life, working as a correspondent for Pacific Islands Monthly and writing about the history of the island. The Australian government awarded her an MBE in 1983. She died at Lismore, NSW, 8 December 2001.
