Pioneer Women of the Portland Bay SettlementPrint Page
The monument was erected following the publication of a book by Miss Sarah Wadmore for Portland`s centenary entitled "Book of Remembrance : Portland Bay district pioneer women`.
Miss Wadmore attempted to have monument erected for the celebrations but it was not completed until 1936 and only with the assistance of Mr. Henry of the Borough council. At the unveiling, the major tribute was paid by Mr. Irvine.
Miss Olive Bree unveiled the memorial while her cousin replied on her behalf. Indeed no women are reported as saying anything during the ceremony, although a letter from Miss Wadmore was read out.
