Pioneers of Caltowie DistrictPrint Page
The plaque commemorates the pioneers who settled in the Caltowie District in 1871.
Caltowie was originally the principal outstation of a local pastoral property known as 'Redbanks', sometimes called 'Carcowie' (Aboriginal for 'lizard waterhole'), subsequently corrupted to 'Caltowie'. The Government Town of Caltowie was surveyed in 1871 at the centre of the Hundred of Caltowie a few months after the hundred had been proclaimed.
