The sundial commemorates the pioneers of Wistow.

“The people of Wistow have been energetic during the past few weeks in preparing for their Centenary celebration and "Back to Wistow." A triangle garden and rockery have been prepared. A row of trees is to be planted on the north side of the main road. A sundial mounted on a concrete base and erected by Mr. J. and the Misses Paterson gives an imposing effect to the roadside in front of the Methodist Church. It is inscribed. "To the memory of the old pioneers." Miss D. Paterson is also carving the names of all the old settlers who lived in the district before the year 1850 on a large stone, which will occupy a prominent position in the triangle garden.” [ Advertiser 19 Mar 1936 ]

“The "Back to Wistow" celebrations were opened on Saturday by Sir Lavington Bonython. He opened the Centenary Garden and unveiled the memorial tablet to pioneers. . . The garden and memorial tablet would be an appropriate and lasting memorial to the pioneers, . . . A procession of school children led the way to a memorial sundial which had been presented by Mr. J Paterson. This was unveiled by Mr. J. Slaven, and a ribbon was cut by Miss Phyllis Saltmarsh.” [ Advertiser 6 Apr 1936 ]
