The swamp mahogany tree commemorates Sydney`s first water-mill built and operated by Thomas West. The water-mill was opened by Mrs Macquarie, wife of Governor Macquarie in 1812.

This Swamp Mahogany Tree Commemorates Sydney`s First
Successful Water- Mill, Built And Operated By Thomas West
On Rushcutters Creek. It was opened by Mrs Macquarie,
Wife Of The Governor, On The 14th January 1812.

For His Enterprise, West Was Promised Land By
Governor Macquarie. His Grant Called Baroom Glen,
Embraced Both Sides Of Rushcutters Creek Which Ran On
The Present Line Of Boundary Street. The Mill Stood
On Its North Bank Near Lindsay Lane, Darlinghurst.

The Survey Posts For Wests Grant Commenced At A Swamp
Mahogany Tree Then Growing Near Queens Avenue, The
Bay Shoreline At That Time.
