Women on the Goldfields
This plaque has been erected by the Bendigo Cemeteries Trust and their Volunteer Committee during the 150th anniversary of gold discovery in the Bendigo Region.
To commemorate the role of women on the goldfields.
In 1851 the diggers flocked to the fledgling Colony in their thousands in search of the riches that would enable them to throw off the cloak of servitude and make a new beginning. Yet all too often it was death, rather than a new way of life, that resulted from their toils.
The efforts of their womenfolk were never recognised, despite the incredible hardship and deprivation they endured, as they struggled to establish homes and raise their families in the harsh Australian clime.
These pioneering women showed extreme courage and fortitude as they suffered the heartbreak of burying their menfolk with monotonous regularity, as the perils of mining took its terrible toll.
And also the memory of the hundreds of stillborn babies, infants and children who were buried in unmarked graves in this and other regional cemeteries
`Tis only a grave but it needs every care
For our angel child lies sleeping there`
