The monument commemorates the brig "Rapid" which landed near this site in 1836 with Colonel William Light and his survey party. Their favourable impressions led to the establishment of a temporary settlement. The monument was unveiled on the 150th anniversary of the landing.

The Rapid was a brig of 161 tons, remembered as the ship which brought William Light's surveying party to the new colony of South Australia. She was purchased by the board of commissioners of the South Australian Company to send out on their first fleet to establish the Colony of South Australia and the city of Adelaide.

The brig "Rapid"

Near this site on October 3rd, 1836 Colonel Wlliam Light and his survery party disembarked from the Rapid and explored the coastline and adjacent plain.
