The plaque commemorates the centenary of the first settlement of the Lilydale District and its pioneers (1861-1961).

Lilydale was originally known as Upper Piper and in 1887 the name was changed to Lilydale. The area was mainly settled in the 1860s by Scotch and German residents and Upper Piper was also referred to as German Town.
