The time capsule under the cairn commemorates Australia Day in the Bicentenary Year of 1988.
This capsule was the initiative of the Canberra Times, Australia Day Canberra Committee and the National Capital Development Commission (NCDC). Its contents feature a letter from Prime Minister Robert J. Hawke, a short history of the newspaper and a letter from its editor, as well as a letter from the Commission. Numerous other mementos are included in the 1.5 metre glass capsule to be opened in 2088.
