The memorial commemorates the first recorded visit to the area by Lieutenant Thomas Laycock Jr and four soldiers of the 102nd, N.S.W.Army Corps on 3rd of February, 1807.
In 1807, Lieutenant Thomas Laycock camped near the current site of the town during his overland journey from Launceston to Hobart .
