The hall was erected in 1930 to commemorate the centenary of Captain Charles Sturt’s voyage of exploration down the Murray River.

Percy Wells who became Mayor of the Corporation of Goolwa and Port Elliot in 1929 and 1930 became frustrated with Council for not building a proper cinema that in 1930 he built and paid for the Centenary Hall, to screen films and to commemorate Captain Charles Sturt’s voyage.
