Major Thomas Mitchell, explorer of Australia Felix, passed south of here on 22 July, 1836 before naming and climbing Mount Arapiles on 22 and 23 July.
Major Mitchell`s expedition into the `Australia Felix` is commemorated by the Major Mitchell Trail, an Australian Bicentennial project with financial assistance from the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments
