The drinking fountain and plaque commemorate the opening of the Kirup water supply in December 1966.
Kirup Dam, consists of an earth fill wall, was constructed in 1966 to supply water for the towns of Kirup and Mullalyup. In 2018, Kirup Dam was taken offline due to declining streamflow and water quality concerns caused by the subsequent low water levels.
