First Meeting of Brighton Council Print Page 

A plaque commemorates the first meeting of the municipal council which was held at the hotel in 1859.
The plaque was provided and erected by J. J. R. and B. Fishelson (the owners of the hotel at the time of unveiling) and was unveiled on the centenary of the meeting.
Note : The Devonshire Hotel is now known as the New Bay Hotel.

This plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of Brighton, Cr R.G.Ward JP, 12 February 1959, to commemorate the first meeting of the Council of the Municipality of Brighton which was held in this hotel on 12 February 1859.
The original councillors were : Chairman Thomas Warner, John Allee, Robert Keys, John Bignell, James Webb, Peter Hurlstone- William, Isaac Milemore
