The tree commemorates the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State. 

An Illawarra Flame Tree was planted in Rotary Park. The second stage will be the planting of 60 red maples at the entrance to Alexandra near the water treatment plant.  The third stage will be the planting of a red oak tree in Jack Shiel Gardens. 

Alexandra and District Open Gardens Incorporated received funding of $8,000 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant trees along the highway, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will beautify the local environment and support native wildlife. 

Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.

On Tuesday, November 11, members of the Alexandra Open Gardens, Alexandra Rotary Murrundindi Shire Council and Goulburn Valley Water gathered to unveil the plaque marking the start of a project which will transform Alexandra. The project was funded through the jubilee tree-planting fund, marking Queen Elizabeth II`s 70 years on the throne. Despite the Queen`s passing, various towns around Australia are making use of the fund to improve their area, to celbrate the Queen`s legacy.

Locally, the funding will help to support a three stage project. The first stage is the planting of an Illawarra flame tree, the launch and plaque installation in Rotary Park. The second stage will be the planting of an avenue of 60 red maples at the entrance to Alexandra, near the water treatment plant. The third stage will be the planting of a red oak in Jack Shiel Gardens.

The jubilee funding for the project is $8000. This is supplemented by $3000 from Alexandra Open Gardens and $2000 from Alexandra Rotary as well as in-kind support from Murrundindi Shire Council and Goulburn Valley Water. The shire arborist also provided advice on tree selections.
