Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIPrint Page
The trees commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.
Somerville Community House Incorporated received funding of $10,000 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant fruit trees at the Annie Sage Community Centre, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will improve community participation and provide habitat for native fauna.
Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.
A special tree planting day was held at Somerville Community House last week in recognition of the passing and long service of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
As an expansion of the Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee grant program, the community house received $10,000 for trees, enabling it to expand a garden at the community centre. Apple trees, pear trees and a range of native and indigenous fruit trees were planted to make the garden enjoyable and edible. One of the first trees – a contemporary cross between an apricot and a pear, fitted well with the theme of the crossing of the new and the old.
Community house manager Kim Fitcher said the tree planting was a fitting and respectful tribute to the Queen’s 70-year service.
