Bayswater Secondary College Avenue of HonourPrint Page Print this page

An Avenue of Honour was planted, and a commemorative plaque unveiled, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee and acknowledge her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.

The project received funding of $5,000 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant an avenue of native trees, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will enhance the tree canopy and raise awareness of The Queen's Jubilee

Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.

We are very proud to show you our Avenue of Honour, planted this year by our Hands on Learning and VCAL students, under the watchful eye of Mr Flynn. As you may know, we lost a large Pin Oak from this space last year in the storms at the end of the year, and the team came together with a dream to design a new functional space in it's place, providing room for the other trees to fill out, as well as a new home for the Weeping Cherry Trees that were at the front of the Senior School building prior to it's demolition. This project received funding from the Australian Government’s Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program.

We have more to come for the space next year, including additional flag poles and a commemorative plaque, and we will have a larger dedication once those works have concluded. From little things, big things grow and we can't wait to see everything blooming at BSC in the future.
