Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIPrint Page
The trees commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.
Derwent Valley Council received funding of $10,909 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant native trees at the Humphrey Street Reserve, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will provide shade to the community and beautify the local environment.
Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.
A new Colin Jones Memorial Garden has been established in the Stephen Street Cemetery with a tree-planting ceremony occurring earlier today. Mr Jones' Widow, Wendy was joined by Mayor Michelle Dracoulis to plant a Golden Rain Tree that Council has been growing for the last six years from a seed grown from Hawthorn Lodge in Bushy Park. Some of Mr Jones' friends from the Derwent Valley Garden Club were also on hand to help mark the occasion.
A new garden has been planted out around the Queens Jubilee tree in Arthur Square, using rose bushes personally selected by Pat Murray from the Derwent Valley Garden Club and paid for from the club's fundraising efforts.
There are also exciting plans for a new garden adjacent to the Humphrey Street Dog Park currently in development. The garden will feature plants and flowers and community seating and will commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year. This garden will be made possible from Grant Funding obtained by Council and the Derwent Valley Garden Club earlier this year.
