Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIPrint Page Print this page

The trees commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State

The project received funding of $20,000 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant native trees at the Crater Lakes Botanic Gardens, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will beautify the local environment and enhance the tree canopy.

Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.

To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee marking 70 years of service of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, the City of Mount Gambier and children from Reidy Park Primary School planted trees at the Elizabeth Knight Reserve on 5 September 2022. The Australian Government funded the tree-planting program and complemented other initiatives across the Commonwealth to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee.

Three days later, on 8 September, Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully after 70 years of service to the Commonwealth. The City of Mount Gambier is celebrating the Queen’s life in many ways and invites the community to join us in her commemoration.

A Book of Condolence to honour the life of the Queen can be signed at the reception at the Civic Centre.
The Queen will forever be a part of the city’s history and heritage, and we will continue to share any formal arrangements to celebrate her incredible life and service.
