The trees were planted, and a commemorative plaque unveiled, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee and acknowledge her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.

Berri Barmera Landcare received funding of $20,000 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant an avenue of trees on Queen Elizabeth Drive, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will enhance the tree canopy, provide shade and improve community well-being.

Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.

A formal ceremony was held on Sunday 4/12/22 at the Barmera Markets to officially open the avenue of 100 Eucalyptus salubris Gimlet trees planted to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, along Queen Elizabeth Drive in Barmera. Volunteers from the Riverland Special School, Berri Girl Guides, 1st Barmera Scout Group, Barmera Girl Guides, Berri Barmera Landcare Volunteers and Berri Barmera Council were presented Certificates of Appreciation for their contribution to the project.

The final tree was planted, and the commemorative plaque was unveiled by Tony Pasin MP and Berri Barmera Mayor Ella Winnall. The auspicious occasion was marked by a rendition of God Save the King and a morning tea fit for King and Queen. This project received funding from the Australian Government's Planting Trees for The Queen's Jubilee Program.
