Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIPrint Page
The trees commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.
Brisbane Catchments Network Inc. received funding of $20,000 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant native trees, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will beautify the area and enhance habitat for native fauna.
Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.
Yesterday North Brisbane Catchments (NBC) were joined by an enthusiastic group of volunteers to take part in a local ‘Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee’ event. NBC secured a grant for this program from the Australian Government, which was used to plant around 100 trees in 7th Brigade Park, Chermside.
Volunteers planted the first 30 trees, with the remaining to be planted by contractors over the next week. It will be wonderful for the community to see these plants flourish over the years as they provide food and habitat for local wildlife.
The event also featured a sausage sizzle and an entertaining native wildlife show presented by D'Aguilar Wildlife. Everyone was amazed to see a saltwater crocodile, a squirrel glider, a wombat and a koala amongst others.
Councillor Adam Allan represented the Brisbane City Council, and enjoyed planting one of the trees close to the banks of Downfall Creek. NBC's next event is a bushcare session, which will be held from 8-10am next Saturday 29 October at 7th Brigade Park. Stay tuned for details!
