Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIPrint Page Print this page

The trees commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.

Bundaberg Christian College received funding of $2,800 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant a line of native trees, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will provide habitat for native fauna and enhance shade for students.

Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.

New trees planted at Bundaberg Christian College today will provide shade for junior school students and commemorate Her Majesty, The Queen’s 70 years of service.

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt took part in the tree planting at the school along with students from the junior school. “Congratulations to Bundaberg Christian College on its successful $2,800 grant from the Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee program which recognises the significant contribution The Queen has made during her 70-year reign,” Mr Pitt said. “Although there isn’t an official count, the Queen is believed to have planted more than 1600 trees and some of those were during her visits to Australia. These tree-plantings will create a long-lasting legacy to honour the memory of the Queen and her service. I hope these trees will flourish to provide shade for the students here today and future students, and a reminder of The Queen’s service to the Commonwealth.”

Bundaberg Christian College Principal Paul Thompson said the trees planted would provide a natural, cooling backdrop for the junior school, families and staff to enjoy. “We have recently expanded our Junior School and built new classrooms, a STEAM room and a performing arts centre and there are no trees in this area of the school,” Mr Thompson said. “The trees will provide shade, as well as a natural habitat for small wildlife and will aid in educating students about insects, bees, butterflies and other wildlife as the trees mature and grow. We are also using trees from the Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee program in our new Japanese inspired garden and to surround our new sensory garden and playground. The plaque unveiled today commemorates the Queen’s Jubilee and students have learnt about the Queen, the royal family and the monarchy.”

Eight local organisations and schools across Hinkler received funding from the Planting Trees for the Queen’s Jubilee program.
