Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth IIPrint Page 
The trees commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and acknowledges her 70 years of service as Australia`s Head of State.
The project received funding of $4,700 from the Queen`s Platinum Jubilee Tree Planting Program to plant trees which will run from 2021-2024. The project will plant advanced shade trees, install a commemorative plaque and hold an event in honour of The Queen’s Jubilee. This will enhance community well-being and enjoyment of their local environment.
Elizabeth II (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime, and was head of state of 15 realms at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female monarch in history.
On Monday afternoon Hillston Lions Club held a public event to honour 70 years of dedicated service (Platinum Jubilee) by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, to Australia and to the Commonwealth. By planting trees, Hillston Lions Club hope they will have a lasting tribute to Her Majesty in our community.
The original application included plans to plant 8 advanced growth Plane trees and construct a curved brick retaining wall with an emu statue at its focus. Following approval, Lions changed the trees to Acer feemannii (‘Autumn Blaze’ Maples) on the advice of council due to their stunning red foliage and less invasive nature. The grant did not include the curved wall or the emu statue.
The advanced growth Autumn Blaze trees were planted in late June. Unfortunately, the weather over the winter and spring months did not allow Lions to install the irrigation system or the rock on which the dedication plaque would be placed. This is still to be completed as the ground dries out. The project was to be completed by the end of December 2022 ie at the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee year.
All up, the Commonwealth grant came to $4,200 with the advanced growth trees taking up the greater majority of the funds. Part of the funding was to include a public commemorative event at the end of the project.
On Monday, Lions hosted a small commemorative event led by The Honourable Susan Ley, Member for Farrer. Also in attendance were Helen Dalton MP, First Vice District Governor 201N4 Lion Geoff Freudenstein, a number of Councillors from the Carrathool Shire and invited members of the community.
