The Memorial plaque and garden commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the railway tragedy of 1952.
In May 1952, ten people died and 82 were injured when a train ran into a stationary train in heavy fog at Berala station. At that time the accident was the first major catastrophe of its type in Sydney, and it was probably the largest accident involving an electric train until the tragic events at Granville. The driver of the electric train was charged with manslaughter in relation to the accident but was later acquitted.
