The plaque commemorates Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) employees who lost their lives in the line of duty. The ABC Board commissioned this Memorial in August 2012 on the first anniversary of the Lake Eyre helicopter crash in which John Bean, Paul Lockyer and Gary Ticehurst lost their lives. The ABC has also created a memorial online with biographies of the deceased to complement the memorial unveiled in the ABC studios in each capital cities.

They were in their twenties, their thirties, their forties, fifties and sixties. They were cameramen, broadcasters, a rural reporter, station manager, a TV director. Pilots, journalists and war correspondents .
