The sculpture commemorates the 296 jockeys who have died in riding accidents during the last 157 years (1847 -2004). The $100000 memorial features a bronze sculpture of legendary jockey, Hughie Cairns, who died from a race fall in the 1920s.

A plaque on the memorial is in memory of Ned Wallish whose vision and determination established the memorial. Ned died in 2009.
