Ordination of WomenPrint Page
The plaque commemorates the ordination of women as deacons, priests and bishop in the cathedral. 2012 marked 20 years since women were first ordained as priests in the Anglican Church of Australia.
After February 1992 ordinations in Canberra were halted because of a recourse to the Supreme Court, a special General Synod voted in favour of the ordination of women as priests. In Brisbane a special Synod was held in November to approve the General Synod motion and on December 20 that year, five women were ordained as priests.
