This plaque pays tribute to the Kombumerri, acknowledging them as the original pioneers - the first explorers and inhabitants of this land. The Kombumerri assisted Europeans settlers but acts of violence caused mistrust which eventually led to both groups adjusting to an uneasy co-existence. Aborigines from this district served their country in conflict on foreign soil, fighting beside other Australians in the defence of their land .
