Wangerriburra CairnPrint Page
The cairn commemorates the Wangerriburra the local Aboriginal tribe, who had lived on a stretch of land approximately 30 by 15 miles. Relations with neighbouring tribes consisted of simmering warfare, which occasionally erupted into hostilities.
As no government funding was forthcoming for the construction of Duck Creek Rod, the local authority decided to finance it by auctioning sites along the road. On these sites buyers could erect cairns of their own choice. Father Enright purchased a site to erect a cairn as a token of remembrance to the local Aboriginal tribe, who had lived on a stretch of land approximately 30 by 15 miles.
