Queensland Police Service - Look to the Stars Acknowledgement PlaquePrint Page Print this page

The "Look to the Stars" artwork and plaque acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands and Elders past, present and future and the significant contribution by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people towards the protection and safety of all people in our country.

The plaque features the artwork "Look to The Stars."  As we look to the stars, the Guiding Constellation lights up the sky, illuminating our way forward through trust, relationships and respect. The artwork incorporates Sir Robert Peel’s nine principles of policing as stars. The artwork was produced by Indigenous artist Jenna Lee from Gilimbaa who worked with a specialist reference group from the QPS to inform the artwork.

"Look to the Stars" was launched by the QPS in May 2018 and serves as a visual reminder of our past, present and future engagements with all Indigenous communities throughout Queensland. Former Commissioner Ian Stewart initiated a Look to the Stars ‘Acknowledgement to Country’ plaque that is gradually being placed at all QPS establishments.

Thursday May 23, saw Inala Police officially ‘Look to the Stars’, with an acknowledgement and unveiling ceremony held at the station.

Launched in 2018, Look to the Stars is a QPS engagement strategy aimed at fostering strong relationships between the QPS and Indigenous communities across Queensland.

This initiative is a turning point in QPS history and the first time the QPS has taken an unified approach in using an artwork to break down barriers and build relationships across all diverse cultures in Queensland.

In line with this commitment to reconciliation, Inala Station is now proud to be adorned with an acknowledgement plaque featuring the artwork. The plaque will be permanently installed at the front entrance to Inala Police Station, symbolising the spirit of reconciliation in the local community.

During the ceremony, a respected Inala Elder, Uncle Albert Holt gave the Acknowledgement to Country before Chief Superintendent Brian Swan spoke about the artwork itself.

Chief Superintendent Swan also spoke of the hope that the unveiling of this plaque would help build even stronger relationships between Inala Police and the Indigenous community and help foster the spirit of reconciliation.

Now that the artwork is in place, Inala Police will continue their great work in the community, building and strengthening great relationships to ensure understanding and collaboration across the community.
