Glenelg Shire Council - Acknowledgement of Country PlaquePrint Page 
Next time you visit a Council facility, you may see a bright new sticker at the entrance. These are our new Aboriginal Acknowledgement of Country plaques, which are displayed at the entranceways of all Customer Service Centres, Visitor Information Centres and Libraries across the Shire.
The Glenelg Shire Aboriginal Acknowledgement Statement features on the circular plaques with designs by Victorian Aboriginal business, Kinya Lerrk who produce the plaques.
Aside from Acknowledging the Traditional Owners across the Shire, we hope to raise greater awareness of the Traditional lands that our Shire encompasses.
The Glenelg Shire sits primarily on Gunditjmara Country which covers Heywood, Casterton and Portland. The Shire also borders Bunganditj Country which crosses into the Nelson area along the Glenelg River and Jardwadjali Country which crosses over into the Glenelg Shire meeting down on the Wannon River near Casterton.

Acknowledgement of Country
The Glenelg Shire Council respectfully acknowledges the
Gundjitmara, Jardawadjali and Bunganditj people as the Traditional
Owners of the land that the Glenelg Shire encompasses and we
pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We
recognise that Aboriginal people have cared for and protected
this land we call home since the dreaming. Their connections
to the land, animals. seas and waterways was, and
continues to be a part of their being and we thank
them for their significant contributions to life in Glenelg.
