Queensland Police Service - Look to the Stars Acknowledgement PlaquePrint Page Print this page

The "Look to the Stars" plaque and artwork acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands and Elders past, present and future and the significant contribution by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people towards the protection and safety of all people in our country.

The plaque features the artwork "Look to The Stars."  As we look to the stars, the Guiding Constellation lights up the sky, illuminating our way forward through trust, relationships and respect. The artwork incorporates Sir Robert Peel’s nine principles of policing as stars. The artwork was produced by Indigenous artist Jenna Lee from Gilimbaa who worked with a specialist reference group from the QPS to inform the artwork.

"Look to the Stars" was launched by the QPS in May 2018 and serves as a visual reminder of our past, present and future engagements with all Indigenous communities throughout Queensland. Former Commissioner Ian Stewart initiated a Look to the Stars ‘Acknowledgement to Country’ plaque that is gradually being placed at all QPS establishments.

On Monday May 13, Upper Mount Gravatt Police Station became the latest station to be adorned with the Look to the Stars artwork and acknowledgement plaque.

As part of a unique morning tea, local officers were joined by Indigenous Elders to unveil the special plaque which plays homage to the history and contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in the community, as well as recognising the vital work they do in keeping communities safe.

As master of ceremonies, Inspector Mark Stewart kept all entertained and we all enjoyed a screening of the Look to the Stars story on video as well as a special Didgeridoo performance from Mr Ian Strudwick from the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums band.

Opening up the ceremony was Uncle Sam Watson. In his Welcome to Country, Uncle Sam said he was proud of how relations between local Indigenous communities and local officers.

Relations have only gone from strength to strength and Uncle Sam commends the work of Look to the Stars for the role it has played in strengthening these vital relationships
