Pinjarra Mural Print Page Print this page

The mural tells the story of Pinjarra the crocodile who is a resident at the Sea Life Aquarium and celebrates local Aboriginal artist Robert Michael Young, and also acknowledges and pays respect to the traditional owners and custodians of the land, in which SEA LIFE Melbourne operates its business upon.

SEA LIFE Melbourne has been home to Pinjarra, one of Australia’s biggest saltwater crocodiles for over five years. In order to pay homage to the 5 metre-long, 750kg croc, the iconic attraction has commissioned local Aboriginal artist, Rob Young to create an authentic artwork which tells the story of the 55-year-old saltwater crocodile. The artwork was unveiled on Thursday 30th May, during National Reconciliation Week.

The mural aims to celebrate not only such an incredible local Aboriginal artist, but also acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners and custodians of the land, in which SEA LIFE Melbourne operates its business upon.

Rob Young, says he was inspired to get involved with the project after growing up watching Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin interact with the powerful, yet beautiful creature. He describes his artwork as adopting a colour palette which reflects the traditional markings from his place of origin, as well as the colours of traditional ochre paints and the crocodile’s environment. He has also incorporated animals within his artwork which are typically part of a crocodile’s diet.

Pinjarra, whose name is aboriginal for ‘place of soft grass and smooth water’, was relocated to SEA LIFE Melbourne after he was found stranded on a cattle farm in Northern Queensland after a significant flood. SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium was considered an ideal location to keep, protect and add to the conservation of this incredible creature, and the brand new state-of-the-art exhibit - Crocodile's Lair - was constructed in 2013 to meet his needs.
