PROSPECT GARDENS / NARNU WIRRA PARK
HISTORY
The Traditional Kaurna Name Of The Nailsworth / Enfield Region Is Narnu Wirra. The Name Refers To The Vast Forest Of Native Pines That Once Covered The Area.
On 25 November 1914 Charles Angas And Keith Bowman Purchased A Part Of Sections 345 And 346 For The Purpose Of Subdivision. The Land Was Divided Into 226 Building Blocks And Placed For Sale On 11 August 1917 Under The Name "Prospect Gardens".
Angas And Bowman Offered The Prospect Council And The People Of The District A Gift Of Two Acres Of Land, To Be Set
Aside For A Park And Gardens For Use By Residents, The Park Became Known As Prospect Gardens Reserve.
In 1986 The Reserve Was Renamed "Bellaire Gardens" Having Regard To The Sister City Alliance Between The City Of Bellaire, Texas And The City Of Prospect, South Australia.
The States Of Texas And South Australia Were Both Celebrating Their 150th Jubilee Anniversaries.
The Council At Its Meeting On 21 November 2000 Resolved That The Park Would Be Known As "Prospect Gardens / Narnu Wirra Park"
This Plaque Commemorates The History Of
The Park And The Planting Of A Copse Of
Native Pines (Callitris Gracilis).
