60th Anniversary Warwick Aerodrome VolunteersPrint Page Print this page

The Warwick Aerodrome was established in 1958 in memory of those who lost their lives in World War Two and is dedicated to the volunteers who helped built the Aerodrome from 1955 to 1958.

The memorial honours the hard work of volunteers from all around the region, who gave up their weekends to build the facility over a period of three years from 1955. When completed the aerodrome was handed over to the council.

The memorial was unveiled during the 60th Anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the aerodrome.

Weekends spent blasting, grading, surfacing and turfing will be remembered in a new memorial to commemorate volunteers who helped build the Warwick Aerodrome six decades ago.

This Saturday, Member for Maranoa David Littleproud will unveil the monument at the Warwick Aerodrome 60th Anniversary celebration.

Warwick Aero Club president Phil Goyne said it was important to honour the hard work of volunteers from all around the region, who gave up their weekends to build the facility over a period of three years from 1955. "Interested citizens made available trucks, tractors, saws, axes, mattocks and shovels,” former WW2 instructor Gus Mauch wrote in historical account, Wings Over Warwick.
