The monument commemorates six soldier settler families who settled in the area in 1952.

Around 60 people from the Poolaijelo community came together last month to commemorate six soldier settlers and their families. Of the six families who arrived in 1952, two family members still remain on farms in the district – Ken Frost and Mark Treglown.

With support from the West Wimmera Shire Council, the local men organised for a small monument to be constructed outside the Poolaijelo Hall, which was officially unveiled in front of the healthy crowd on May 22. Poolaijelo’s Marjorie Todd said the event was well attended by members of the Poolaijelo community.

Returned WWII veteran Kelvin Smibert also spoke at the ceremony, saying he was proud of his Poolaijelo connection as a soldier settler.

Former students of the Poolaijelo School joined the settlers and their families for morning tea after the official ceremony and enjoyed sharing fond memories of the area with each other. People from far and wide attended the event including residents from Ocean Grove, Adelaide, Melbourne and Warrnambool.
