Front Inscription

`Friendship Tree`

This sculpture celebrates the friendship between the communities of Mosman and Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, China.  The original is situated in Mudanjiang and this is its companion.

During the artist residency in Mudanjiang I noticed an absence of native birds, something we take for granted here in Mosman.  We are fortunate to wake up to the sound of birdsong every morning.

`Friendship Tree` represents the major native bird types of Mosman - magpies, kookaburra and seagulls.  The seagulls signify that we are situated on the coast and the kookaburra and magpies represent that we are blessed with beautiful areas of native vegetation and parklands.

The human figure, as well as representing the tree, extends the hand of friendship
