Dear Monument Australia visitors, we are a self-funded, non-profit organisation, dedicated to recording monuments throughout Australia. Over time the costs of maintaining this website have risen substantially (in fact they are probably larger than those of many companies who exist for profit). In the past we have borne all the costs associated with maintaining the website but we are now having difficulties in paying the monthly expenses.
If Monument Australia is useful to you, please make a donation to keep this historical and educational resource available. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Centenary of the Summertown InstitutePrint Page
The plaque commemorates the centenary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Summertown Institute in 1884. The institute was officially opened on the 28th January 1885.
Summertown October 6. The quiet little township seems to go ahead. The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Summertown Institute was performed recently by Mr. Roland Rees. After the ceremony there was a good tea and entertainment, both of which were greatly enjoyed, the entertainment being particulally successful. When finished the building will be quite an ornament to the district. If the rate of progress continues as at present the institute will soon be opened.
