The statue is a tribute to Mick the Cattle Dog who saved the life of his owner Sid McCorry in 1901. 

In 1901 an injured stockman fell off his horse. He scratched a message onto his tin matches, threaded it onto his belt and strapped it around the neck of his dog Mick, and sent him home to get help. Mick the Dog saved the life of his owner, Sid McCorry. The statue is a tribute to his beloved companion.
