The plaque commemorates Aboriginal Servicemen who fought in the Battle of Kokoda.

Aboriginal Elders travelled to Kokoda to perform cultural ceremonies to bring to rest the spirit of six fallen Aboriginal servicemen who fought in the campaign. In excess of 5000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders served their country during World War Two.

The Kokoda Track campaign or Kokoda Trail campaign was part of the Pacific War of World War II. The campaign consisted of a series of battles fought between July and November 1942 between Japanese and Allied—primarily Australian—forces in what was then the Australian territory of Papua.
