Hoskins Memorial Church Chimes Carillon Print Page

The Chimes Carillon was unveiled and dedicated in 1948 as a memorial to the service rendered by members of the congregation during World War Two. 

The Hoskins Memorial Church, was the gift of Charles Henry Hoskins, proprietor of the steelworks, in recognition of the grace and favour of Almighty God, and as a family memorial. The church contains stain glass windows in memory of members of the Hoskins family. 

With only five churches in Australia equipped with chimes carillon it is expected that, by the end of the year, Hoskins Memorial Presbyterian Church will be the sixth edifice in the Commonwealth to have a beautifully-toned carillon, the chimes of which will be heard for more than three miles. The chimes carillon, which will cost in the vicinity of £1,000, will be a memorial principally to those members of the congregation who served their country during the 1939-45 World War, and will be presented to the church by the congregation substantially supported by members of the Hoskins family, who are keenly interested in the project. Already the Women's Guild has donated £50. Speaking of the new innovation today the Rev. Norman H. Symes said the carillon would be operated by an 18 note keyboard, the console of the instrument would be located near the present organ. The sound of the hammers striking the tubular bells would be amplified by sound projectors situated in the belfry and a player would be able to portray personal musical expression of light and shade. The committee hopes to install the carillon in time for the Presbyterian Church anniversary in November, but failing that, it is believed that the complete mechanism will be in operation for Christmas.

Representative of every religious denomination, the services and war time auxiliaries, a large gathering attended yesterday's unveiling and dedication of the memorial chimes carillon in Hoskins Presbyterian Church. Guest speakers included the Mayor (Ald. W. Z. Black) and the Member for Hartley (Mr. J. Chalmers, M.L.A.), in addition to local and visiting ministers. Mrs. Cecil H. Hoskins performed the unveiling ceremony on behalf of the Hoskins family, while the Rev. Norman H. Symes led the dedication service. Following the unveiling, church carillonists rendered a recital during the latter part of the afternoon. A detailed report will appear in Wednesday's issue.
