St Mark`s War Memorial BuildingPrint Page

The building commemorates former members of the college who died in service or were killed in action in World War Two. The building faces Kermode Street.
The first section of the quadrangle of St. Mark's College, which will face Kermode street North Adelaide was opened by the Governor (Sir Willoughby Norrie) yesterday and blessed by the Bishop of Adelaide (Rt. Rev. H. P. Robin). The building, designed as one side of the central Gate House, at present provides 14 bed-study rooms. It is the college war memorial, and the Governor unveiled a plaque containng the names of 18 members of the college who were killed in the war.
Referring to the building as part of a greater plan for the college, the Bishop of Adelaide commented on university buildings in Adelaide and Perth. There were buildings not far away, he said, where appearance had been sacrificed to a blatant utilitarianism. Sir Willoughby Norrie said that a college such as St Mark's worked like the fighting forces by means of a communal life and communal training, with emphasis on religion and discipline.
